Is anyone else sick of the “let’s protect Monsanto’s profits” professional “activist” clique that keeps shoving “labeling” (a tactic that’s worked in the history of fucking never) down our throats as “the only realistic demand”? So are we. So let’s have a talk about it…

First and foremost, let us start by pointing out the glaringly obvious: Labeling does NOT stop agro-giants like Monsanto from pushing GMOs into the food supply. Labeling doesn’t take the GMOs out of our food and it does absolutely 100% of fucking NOTHING to protect the most vulnerable among us – those who do not have access to the information and/or are living in deep poverty and cannot afford inevitably more expensive non-GMO foods. We can already see this emerging now with premium (and more expensive) non-GMO options at places like Trader Joes and Whole Foods.
Let’s be realistic here: How many of your (the readers’) extended family, friends, co-workers neighbors and community members can currently afford to shop at these high-end grocers or purchase their premium non-GMO foods? In this way “labeling” creates a two-tier food system directly correlated to socio-economic class and education.

Labeling is a demand that actually protects Monsanto’s profits and keeps GMOs in the food supply in the long-run.
How many toxins have consumer advocacy activists fought to force companies to label in our food supply in the past few decades, and how many of those are still in our food supply?
Who reads every label on a crowded “food” product package? In an atmosphere where GMOs have penetrated approximately 70% of the products on the shelves the average N.American grocery store and where trendy high-end grocers like Whole Foods are voluntarily implementing GMO labeling policies, what will a GMO label mandate do but allow agro-giants to continue producing GMO foodstuffs and pushing them to those who cannot afford premium, organic and non-GMO foods?
If this is all seems abstract or speculative, just look at the history of movement to label high levels of sodium or food additives and preservatives. Who do you think is more likely to be able to afford the more expensive food products that are free of these chemicals: the very rich, or the very poor?

If labeling is a demand which protects agro-business’ future profits (by allowing them to continue pushing labeled GMOs in the food supply), a fight which corporations like Monsanto would PREFER we fight (rather than demanding a ban), why are professional “activists” pushing labeling so hard, to the exclusion of more serious demands for ban on GMOs and – ultimately – to the divisive exclusion of those advocating a GMO ban?
Let’s think about this. It is now well known that corporations routinely spy, collect intel, infiltrate and even indirectly fund social movement in order to ensure the demands of movements stay within parameters of cost/risk acceptable to the corporations. This is not a sensationalistic statement or conspiracy theory-mongering. Monsanto in particular has been caught contaminating the fields of farmers who reject GMOs around the world, then suing these farmers out of business. Saint Louis is home to the world headquarters of Monsanto.
It requires a high degree of cognitive dissonance to believe that this corporate agro-giant is contaminating farms around the world for the purpose of running them out of business while simultaneously rejecting the high probability that Monsanto has paid staffers infiltrating local movement to keep the “demands” of the movement consistent with what ultimately will protect Monsanto’s profits and products’ market access and viability.
Who better to keep local movement on a short corporate leash than professional “activists” connected to the “democratic” Party (which takes A LOT of money from Monsanto), with all the mainstream “legitimacy”, resources, and sexy/glossy sheen they put on movement through smooth presentations, permitted marches and collaboration with the police (who serve the corporations, NOT us), and bullhorn-toting talkingpoint-spewing flapping head celebrity activists and accompanying indy media personalities?Our demand is NO GMOs.
It is telling that St. Louis-area professional “activists” and their analogues across the country push-back so hard against the demand for a GMO ban and push labeling so hard as “the only realistic demand”, or tell us that labeling is “just a first step”; that once the GMOs are labeled as poisons THEN we can raise the demand for an outright ban. Why do these professionals – many, many of whom receive funding from large liberal endowments via their connections to the Monsanto-funded “democratic” Party, resort to personal attacks, smearing individual activists’ names, and irrelevant ad hominems regarding the personal lives and character of those of us who insist labeling is NOT enough and demand, instead, an outright BAN on GMOs? Who are these professional “activists” REALLY working for and what are they REALLY working toward?
The question we must now ask is WHY? WHY expend so much time and energy getting GMOs labelled as poisons and THEN demand a ban? Why not just go for the ban? If this truly is a “democracy” we are living in (as opposed to, idunno, fascist corporate dictatorship – i.e. a corporatocracy) then we should be able get these GMOs banned REGARDLESS whether or not they carry a warning label or not – because, well… democracy, right?
Why do professional “activists” insist we go into this fight against one of the most powerful corporations in the world with one hand tied behind our backs and wearing a blindfold? Should professional “activists” be deciding for us what the demands of the movement will be and imposing them down through a hierarchy within the movement, or should these activists ideally be implementing the will of the people in movement?
How many deeply impoverished people & working poor leaving behind while we push an empty, toothless demand which only dooms another generation (or more) to continue eating poison?
The FACT is we don’t need labels, and we don’t need the professional liberal “activist” NGO-industrial complex, either, in order to win this fight. We need GMO poisons out of our food supply, not in our food supply but labeled. We need one another and a determination to win our fight to BAN GMOs outright.

Labeling is the battle Monsanto WANTS us fighting them on. Why should we waste a generation (or more) of activism and energy in struggle for the fight Monsanto wants us fighting?
We do NOT need movement managers, “peace” police, the police, or mainstream activist gatekeepers to tell us how to fight or to fight our fights for us. We only need one another and a determination to do what it takes to protect ourselves, our families and communities, and one another – and that means following the example of the peoples of 26 other nations in fighting like hell to BAN GMOs.
The only way to ensure everyone – including NATURE – is protected from GMOs is an OUTRIGHT BAN.We’ll be at the March Against Monsanto on Saturday, May 24th outside of the Monsanto world headquarters, and we welcome you to join us there.
